Talofa:
For the past eight years we have discussed the idea of developing school report cards for each school and for the Department of Education. The challenges of identifying the components for inclusion in the report card and collecting the data to validate each topic were daunting at best. It was decided that our report card would include:
- Student demographics
- Student attendance
- Standards-Based Assessment (SBA) results
- Stanford Achievement Test (SAT) results
- Graduation rate
- Teacher credentials, and
- Teacher attendance
Additionally, we reported the students achievement results in two categories; that being ‘Advance' and ‘Proficient.'
The completion and launching of this major project is the first major stride the DOE has accomplished and demonstrates our commitment to track student achievement at each school. This effort will lead to the identification of schools that are progressing and those which are struggling. For schools that are progressing, we will identify the positive and successful practices that attribute to student learning. The schools which are struggling will have different practices implemented to hopefully change the variables that hinder student achievement.
This is the first time in the history of American Samoa Education that we are publicly sharing the results of the efforts of our students, teachers, staff and the support we receive from the parents and community. This information is intended to provide guidance and direction in our efforts to raise the level of student achievement in our schools.
I want to thank all the school administrators and the project team that were responsible in preparing this first ever, School and Territorial Report Cards. What an accomplishment!
